As part of the Co-op Group, our belief in social responsibility and supporting local communities is core to our business.
The Co-op has always had a purpose beyond profit, and corporate social responsibility has been embedded in our approach to business since our formation over 150 years ago.
Our commitment in social responsibility and supporting the local community is demonstrated in many ways, from providing funding for local needs and providing volunteers for community initiatives to providing free legal advice or pro bono, as it is commonly known.
Some examples of work which we have done in the community and partnerships we have formed with charities include:
After a decisive vote by its members and colleagues, the Co-op Group announced that it will partner with British Red Cross to tackle social isolation and loneliness.
As part of the Co-op Group, Co-op Legal Services will fundraise and campaign over two years to help address these issues, which are reported to affect approx. five million people across the UK.

- Co-op Legal Services recognised as the first corporate to raise £15m in potential charitable donations through Will writing.
Co-op Legal Services was recognised by Remember A Charity as the first corporate organisation to raise £15m in potential gifts to charities through the Wills written for its customers.
This followed a parliamentary inquiry into charitable giving, which recommended legacy gifts as a vital route to boost charity funds. As part of proactive activity to increase consumer awareness of charitable giving in Wills, Co-op Legal Services has partnered with legacy fundraising campaign Remember A Charity since 2012.
Through this partnership, Co-op Legal Services has shared tried and tested methods with both Remember A Charity and the Cabinet Office, helping to evidence the view that proactivity directly prompts an increase in donations pledged to charity made through Will writing.
- Nepal Earthquake Appeal Thanks Co-op Customers Members & Staff
Co-op legal Services, along with all other Co-op Group businesses also support many international charities and appeals. Most recently, following the Nepal Earthquake, colleagues from the Co-op, its members and customers helped to raise over £45,000 as part of a national appeal to help the stricken country.
As part of the UK’s largest mutual business, we believe we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to have a positive social impact. Something that sits at the heart of being a co-operative.
