Our community work

As part of the Co-op Group, our belief in social responsibility and supporting local communities is core to our business.

The Co-op has always had a purpose beyond profit, and corporate social responsibility has been embedded in our approach to business since our formation over 150 years ago.

Our commitment in social responsibility and supporting the local community is demonstrated in many ways, from providing funding for local needs and providing volunteers for community initiatives to providing free legal advice or pro bono, as it is commonly known.

One in four people experience a mental health problem in any one year. This is why the Co-op is working in partnership with Mind, the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and Inspire.

Find out more about our charity partnerships

Co-op Legal Services was recognised by Remember A Charity as the first corporate organisation to raise £15m in potential gifts to charities through the Wills written for its customers.

This followed a parliamentary inquiry into charitable giving, which recommended legacy gifts as a vital route to boost charity funds. As part of proactive activity to increase consumer awareness of charitable giving in Wills, Co-op Legal Services has partnered with legacy fundraising campaign Remember A Charity since 2012.

Through this partnership, Co-op Legal Services has shared tried and tested methods with both Remember A Charity and the Cabinet Office, helping to evidence the view that proactivity directly prompts an increase in donations pledged to charity through Will writing.

As part of the UK’s largest mutual business, we believe we have both a responsibility and an opportunity to have a positive social impact. Something that sits at the heart of being a co-operative.
