The Dangerous Dogs Act was amended in May 2014 and the law applies to all dog owners in England & Wales:
It is a criminal offence for anyone in charge of a dog to allow it to be dangerously out of control in a public place or on private property. Police or a local authority have powers to seize a dangerously out of control dog in a public or a private place.
It is a criminal offence for a dog to attack an assistance dog (guide dog).
Our Personal Injury Solicitors have specialist expertise in dog bites and animal attacks on children which often results in both physical and psychological injuries. If you or a member of your family have been bitten by a dog or attacked by an animal, we recommend you report it to the Police in case other people have been or could be attacked by the same animal.
To assist a dog bite compensation claim try to find out the following information without putting yourself or anyone else at any risk:
- The name of the dog breed
- The identity of the dog owner
- The address where the dog/owner lives
- If anyone else has been bitten or attacked by the same dog
- If the dog has behaved aggressively before.
In dog bite claims involving specific dogs which have previously behaved aggressively, and restricted dog breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers, it may be easier to prove liability (fault) against the dog owner in those cases than it could be to prove liability against the owner of a dog that has not previously behaved aggressively.
Every case is different and our free claims assessment service will help you understand whether there is a reasonable chance of successfully pursuing your claim.
