Lead Family Law Solicitor, Bristol
Ben is a Lead Family Law Solicitor at Co-op Legal Services, specialising in divorce, children matters and financial matters resulting from the breakdown of a marriage or relationship. Ben also assists clients in cohabitation disputes, pre-nuptial agreements, post-nuptial agreements and cohabitation agreements.
Throughout Ben’s career, he has assisted clients all the way through their matters, including in court. Ben has extensive experience in advocacy and is comfortable with court proceedings for both children and financial matters.
The family law advice Ben provides is pragmatic and solution-focused. Ben is empathetic with clients and is often praised for his reassuring and resolution-focused approach to resolving disputes. As is often the case, particularly where children are involved, a relationship needs to be maintained between separated individuals, and this guides Ben's approach to resolving disputes.
Equally, Ben recognises that individuals do not wish to be involved in a dispute that can be costly and emotionally taxing. Ben will ascertain the motivations of clients at the outset to formulate a strategy and identify priorities for individuals. This assists in the efficient and cost-effective resolution of disputes.
Ben’s advocacy experience means he's able to explain the court process clearly to clients and guide them through their matter. As every case is different, Ben will undertake a thorough exercise at the outset of each case and work with a client to follow their desired outcome as much as possible. This enables Ben to provide a realistic appraisal of an individual’s position and help them to understand the prospects of them being successful in their case.
Ben assisted a police officer during divorce proceedings, which included a dispute surrounding the care of the children and finances. Ben successfully negotiated care arrangements that worked in partnership with the officer’s shift pattern. As part of the financial proceedings, there was a drive from the other side towards the officer’s pension as it was a significant portion of the matrimonial assets. Ben was able to secure an outcome that allowed the officer to preserve the pension and secure the officer’s future income.
Successfully represented paternal grandparents through their application for a Special Guardianship Order (SGO), including at a Final Hearing. The paternal grandparents were awarded a SGO, securing the care of their granddaughter and parental responsibility so they were able to make decisions in the best interests of the child.
Secured a Child Arrangement Order (CAO) for a father to share the care of his child. The matter was particularly challenging in light of the father’s shift pattern, which was on a 10 week work rota. This resulted in a care arrangement that incorporated the father's working pattern.
Ben qualified as a solicitor in 2010 after previously working as a paralegal. Ben has specialised in Family Law throughout his career.
Ben lived and worked in London for over 5 years and was part of the team who launched family law through Co-op Legal Services in 2012. Ben returned to Cardiff in 2016 and during his time there he led a small family team in a large national organisation, specialising in particular in representing Union and Police Federation members.
Ben re-joined the family team at Co-op Legal Services, this time in the Bristol office, in October 2020.
