Jodie Newton is a Probate Solicitor at Co-op Legal Services based in Manchester city centre.
Jodie has a wide variety of experience in Probate and estate administration matters, and prides herself on being able to explain complex matters to customers without the legal jargon.
Jodie would describe her role as a Probate Solicitor in the following way:
When someone passes away, the assets and liabilities that they leave behind make up what is known as their estate. The legal process for dealing with the estate is called the administration of estates.
Every estate is different, but the estate administration service includes determining how an estate is to be distributed (which depends on whether the deceased left a Will or not), investigating the assets and liabilities in an estate and preparing and submitting the application for a Grant to the Probate Court.
Once the Grant has been obtained, the estate can begin to collect in the assets, settle any liabilities and sell or transfer any property (if relevant). It is also essential that the Tax affairs are settled, and any enquiries with the Department for Work and Pensions concluded, before producing final accounts and distributing an estate.
Jodie particularly enjoys helping customers through a very difficult time in their lives. Jodie says that she is happy for her customers when she is able to finalise an estate in a time quicker than is expected.
Jodie graduated from the University of Chester in 2012 then worked full time whilst studying part time at the University of Law graduating in 2014 with a Masters in Legal Practice.
Jodie has worked in private client law since 2012, originally starting in a temporary role as a typist, then was promoted to a Paralegal, and going on to qualify as a Solicitor in 2015.
Jodie joined Co-op Legal Services in 2015 after being with a large law firm in Staffordshire for three years.
Jodie previously worked in private client law dealing with Will writing, Court of Protection applications and administration, Trust administration, Lasting Power of Attorney, Probate and estate administration.
