Vehicle accidents at work
Moving vehicle accidents causing injury are most common in the transport, storage and construction industries. Each year approximately 2,000 workers are seriously injured and several deaths occur (16 in 2013/14) because of accidents involving company vehicles, ranging from fork lift trucks and vans, to light commercial and large goods vehicles.
Many work related vehicle accidents occur during the storage, collection and delivery of goods. Each day many workers across the UK including delivery drivers, sub-contractors, warehouse operatives, company employees and visitors to businesses are at risk of:
- being hit by a moving workplace vehicle i.e. lorry, fork lift truck
- being crushed between moving vehicles
- hit by objects falling out of vehicles
- falling from cabs
- falling from tail-lifts
- falling from goods ramps
- being hurt by overturning vehicles
Ironically, twice as many people are hit by vehicles moving forward than by vehicles reversing, and a similar number are trapped by something collapsing or overturning.
Moving vehicle accidents in workplaces are not just confined to a delivery bay, construction site, warehouse or a logistics facility, these accidents can happen anywhere and at any time and the consequences can be devastating.
