Co-op Legal Services Sponsor Red Shoe Walk to Support British Red Cross
03 May 2016
The Co-op has always campaigned for a better society and our partnership with the British Red Cross as our charity partner this year reflects our ongoing commitment.
Co-op Legal Services is sponsoring a Red Shoe Walk from England to Wales and we are thinking Big and going Red from 13 to 15 May on The Big Red Weekend to help push The Co-operative's fundraising efforts towards our £3.5 million target.
We've already made brilliant progress, raising more than £1 million for the British Red Cross with various activities right across The Co-operative Group of businesses. From cake sales, to running marathons and cycling from London to Paris, we've been inventive in our approach; and we've had fun too!
The Big Red Weekend gives us all an opportunity to do something Big and Red to raise money for the British Red Cross. Co-op Legal Services' is sponsoring a Red Shoe Walk from England to Wales on May 15 starting at the Severn Bridge in Bristol (BS35 4BL) and registration starts at 11am.
So put on your red shoes and join us in Bristol if you can, or join Red Shoe Walks in London or Cambridge, see British Red Cross Red Shoe Walks for details.
Co-op Legal Services' digital team member Sue Richardson, who has already raised £275 in donations herself, is taking part in the Bristol Red Shoe Walk alongside her 8 year old daughter Charlotte; will be tweeting live from the event using the hashtag #BIGred.
You can also go the extra mile for the BIG Red Weekend by taking part in one of our family fun Red Shoe Walks across the UK, or you can organise your own DIY Red Shoe Walk in your local area, connecting local Co-op stores and offices, see British Red Cross Red Shoe Walks for details.
Other Co-operative Group businesses are also getting involved with Red Dress Up days, Red nail varnish and lipstick for the management team in our distribution centres, 100 people walking 13.1 miles from our Head office in Manchester to Rochdale, and Funeralcare branches organising charity car washes and high tea; all helping us to go Big and Red.
Want to get involved? We'll be posting some ideas for you to fundraise yourself over the Big Red Weekend on our Twitter and Facebook pages everyday next week, so please check in with us to discover small things you can do to support the British Red Cross.
We'll update you on our fundraising activities, the initiatives and work being done in the community and how much we've raised as soon as we can.
If you do nothing else on the Big Red Weekend, please text BIGRED to 70600 to donate £2 to help the British Red Cross campaign to tackle loneliness in the UK.
Research from universities in Manchester, York and Newcastle reported in The Guardian shows that loneliness can increase the risk of having a stroke or coronary artery disease by 30%. Previous research has already linked loneliness to high blood pressure and early death.
Research carried out by The Co-operative showed that 15% of the UK population regularly feel lonely, 28% know someone who is lonely and 61% don't tell anyone about their feelings of loneliness.
As our society becomes increasing focused on the individual and less focused on the communities we all live in, loneliness will increase. At Co-op Legal Services we aim to reconnect with communities as we raise money for the British Red Cross to tackle loneliness nationwide.
