The Government announced today that the first people eligible for employment tribunal fee refunds will be contacted individually and given the opportunity to apply for a refund of their fees. The Employment Tribunal Fee Refund scheme is a result of a recent judgment issued by the Supreme Court, which declared tribunal fees unlawful.
The implementation of the Scheme will be completed in phases. Up to 1,000 people will be contacted from today during the opening phase of the scheme. This first phase is expected to last for approximately 4 weeks.
Successful applicants will also recover 0.5% interest on their fee payment, on top of a full refund of the fees that they paid. The interest will be calculated from the date they paid the fees up until the date the fees are refunded.
The Government will provide further information on how to access the Employee Tribunal Fee Refund Scheme once the scheme has been fully rolled out, but as a starting point, this opening phase will be welcomed by all those individuals who paid to bring their employment tribunal claims.
