Making Your Will in 4 Steps
Lots of people say to us that they’d always put off writing a Will because they thought it would take a lot of time and effort. These same people then tell us that if had they known how easy we make it, they would have made a Will sooner.
All it takes is four simple steps, at the end of which you’ll have a legally valid Will in place. This will ensure that your wishes are clear after you die.
Step 1 - Prepare Your Will
Our online Will writing tool helps you understand what is involved and takes you through a series of questions to fill in. You’ll be asked for information about yourself, such as your name, address and date of birth. We also include explanations of different terms like your Executor and beneficiaries so you’ll also be asked for the names of the people you want to include in this respect. If there’s anything you don’t know or you’re not sure about, simply leave it blank (see Step 2).
The benefit of starting your Will online is that you can begin whenever you like, anytime - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also gives you the opportunity to understand more about what’s involved and to think about what you’d like to include in your Will.
However, we understand that not everyone likes to work online, or you may prefer to contact our Will advisors first. If so, you can complete this step over the phone by talking to one of our Wills team. We’re here to help you from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
Step 2 - A Will Writer Calls You
At the end of the Co-op online Wills journey, we’ll ask you to choose a time to speak to one of our Will writers over the phone.
During this phone call, you can discuss your situation with your Will writer and ask any questions that you may have. We’ll review your wishes and help you to get a Will that’s right for you.
Step 3 - You Receive a Draft of Your Will
We’ll then draft your Will and send you an initial version in the post or by email. This gives you the opportunity to review the draft Will at your convenience. If there’s something you want to change or anything that isn’t quite right, just contact your Will writer and ask for amendments (changes) to be made. There are no additional charges for this.
Once you have approved it, we’ll send you the final original Will in the post, which you can then sign and have witnessed, and return it to us. You will then have a legally valid Will in place!
Step 4 – Your Will is Stored for Free
We will store your Co-op Will for free, for life. We can keep the original Will and provide you with a copy to keep at home for future reference. You may choose to tell your Executor/s or beneficiaries that your Will is stored with the Co-op, as this would prevent any delays finding your Will when the time comes.
So, making a Will isn’t a daunting task that should be put off until you’ve got more time. We’ve made the Will writing process easy, and because you don’t need to travel to a Solicitor’s office, it’s something you can do at a time that’s convenient for you.
