Make a Difference by Remembering a Charity in Your Will
09 September 2019
In support of Remember a Charity Week, we explain what a difference you can make by leaving a gift to charity in your Will. A charitable gift doesn't need to be extravagant and it shouldn't detract from the provision you want to leave your loved ones. There really is no gift too small.
Gifts in Wills Make a Real Difference
Many of us understand the benefits that making a Will can have for our loved ones, but did you know that the benefits of your Will can actually reach even further than that?
Many of the charities that we know, support and – in some cases – rely on simply wouldn't exist without gifts in Wills. Every year in the UK, more than £3 billion is left to charities in Wills. These gifts are helping to push forward life-saving research, they ae lifting people out of a life of poverty and they are protecting our environment for future generations.
Cancer Research UK said:
"Without legacy gifts, Cancer Research UK would not have made such incredible progress. Our research is world-leading. We have been integral in seeing cancer survival go from 1 in 4 people in the 1970s to 2 in 4 people today. And a third of what we fund can be attributed to legacies."
And Rob Cope, Director of Remember a Charity, said:
"Gifts in Wills are incredibly important to UK charities. Two out of three guide dogs and six out of ten life boat launches are funded by gifts in Wills, as is over a third of Cancer Research UK's life-saving work. Even a small amount can make a huge difference, helping good causes to continue their vital work."
In research carried out earlier this year, Remember A Charity found that the proportion of Brits that would be happy to leave a gift to charity has increased from 35% to 40% over the last decade. This is a huge step in the right direction.
However, while this is fantastic progress, there is still a way to go. Just 15.8% of Estates administered in 2017 included a charitable gift. It would only take a 4% increase to generate an additional £1 billion per year for charity. Imagine how much more could be achieved if everyone left a gift to their favourite charity in their Will.
