During the past 12 months, Co-op Legal Services has seen a 53% increase in gifts being left to charity in Wills. The most popular charities that our Wills clients are leaving gifts to include cancer charities and animal charities. There has also been a 227% increase in gifts being left to homelessness and poverty charities.
Across the thousands of Wills that Co-op Legal Services has written over the last 12 months, we have seen a significant increase in the number of people choosing to leave a gift to charity in their Will. Many people choose to leave a specific amount of money or a share of their overall Estate to charity, while others leave a more personal item for the charity to make use of, such as a musical instrument or a vehicle.
Without charitable gifts in Wills, many of the charities we know, support and – in some cases – rely on wouldn't be able to exist. Every year, gifts in Wills generate around £3 billion for charitable organisations and figures released by Cancer Research UK show that gifts in Wills are their single biggest fundraising source. This week is the 10th annual Remember A Charity Week, which Co-op Legal Services is supporting for the 7th consecutive year.
Over the past decade, Remember A Charity has recorded that the number of Brits willing to consider leaving a gift to charity in their Will has increased from 35% to 40%. However, there is still a common misconception that charitable gifts in Wills need to be substantial amounts of money, which puts some people off leaving a gift. In reality, it doesn't matter how small or large a charitable gift is and leaving a gift to charity shouldn't detract from the provision that you want to leave for your loved ones.
Rob Cope, Director of Remember A Charity, commented:
"It's great that Co-op Legal Services is continuing to support our campaign, driving legacy giving forward on behalf of our charities.
''We hope this year's Remember A Charity Week will encourage more people across the UK to consider how they can pass on something wonderful and to make a real impact. If everyone left just a small amount to good causes, once they've taken care of loved ones, it could make an enormous difference for future generations."
James Antoniou, Head of Wills for Co-op Legal Services said:
"We're delighted to be partnering with Remember A Charity for the seventh year running, as we continue to progress with our shared aim to make Will Writing and considering leaving a gift to charity the social norm.
"Over the past twelve months, we've certainly seen an increased desire for clients to leave charitable gifts of all types in wills and this is often something that the charities heavily rely on. We work with a number of charities, both large and small, offering affordable Will Writing services to their supporters to make this possible."
