Our client Elaine, who purchased one of our discounted Estate Planning packages, told us, “After mum died, I wanted to have everything sorted for my children. Now they will not have anything to worry about when the time comes.”
Elaine Barwell is 67 and lives in Kent. She has 3 grown up children and is also a grandmother. Elaine told us how her mother had sadly been diagnosed with vascular dementia before she passed away last summer.
Fortunately Elaine and her mother had gone through the process of putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place before her mother’s illness had developed to a point where she was unable to make her own decisions. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document in which Elaine’s mother was able to grant Elaine the legal authority to make decisions on her behalf.
Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, no one would have been able to step in and make decisions about Elaine’s mother’s finances or medical care when she became unable to express her wishes herself. Elaine explained, “It makes dealing with legal matters much easier, especially when you are stressed and worried about your parent and their wishes.”
Elaine’s mother also had a Will in place, clearly stating her wishes. When she passed away, Elaine experienced first-hand how effective a Will can be in reducing the stress and hassle involved in dealing with a loved one’s Estate.
Following this experience, Elaine felt that it was important to get her own affairs in order, explaining, “After mum died, I wanted to have everything sorted for my children.” So she did just this by putting in place her Will, Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and Funeral Plan with the Co-op. She added, “Now I know they will not have anything to worry about when the time comes.”
Supporting Cancer Research UK
Elaine purchased one of our Estate Planning Packages for her Will and Lasting Power of Attorney. With this package Elaine got her affairs in order and she saved money. She was also able to support Cancer Research UK with 10% of our fee (excluding VAT) being paid to Cancer Research UK.
One in two people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. Currently, 2 in 4 people diagnosed with cancer will survive their disease for 10 years or more. Cancer Research UK’s ambition it to accelerate progress so that by 2034, 3 in 4 people will survive their cancer.
When discussing the donation that had been made to Cancer Research UK as a result of her purchase, Elaine said, “One day it might be me benefitting from their research.”
Alongside her Will, Elaine took out two Lasting Power of Attorneys; one covering her Health and Welfare and one covering her Property and Financial Affairs. She commented, “I believed it was necessary for my children to be able to have control for me, should I not be able to speak for myself.”
As well as getting her legal affairs in order, Elaine decided to take out a Funeral Plan with Co-op Funeralcare. It’s also possible to support Cancer Research UK when purchasing a Pre-paid Funeral Plan with Co-op Funeralcare. With our special discount code, you can save £150 off the final price of your chosen plan and Co-op Funeralcare will give £100 (inclusive of VAT) from your purchase to Cancer Research UK. More information can be found halfway down this page.
Now that her Will, Lasting Power of Attorney and Funeral Plan are all sorted, Elaine explained, “I feel so much better knowing everything is in place, whatever happens. It has meant great peace of mind for me that my children will not have to worry if anything happens to me.”
